Mahishasur’s son Gajasur was beating up and murdering different Shiv Gans. Gajasur would have created worst condition on the earth if he had been left alone, and Lord Shiva did not want the Punya Kshetra—Kashi—to be disturbed in any way. Lord Shiva injured Gajasur with his Trishul and raised him into the air. Gajasur told that he was going to die by lord shiva and it is a blessing. As Gajasur had died in the Avimukta Kshetra known as Kashi and that it was there that his body would take on the shape of a massive Shiv Ling. Kriti Vaseshwar will be the name of this Ling. Compared to the Shiv Lings in Kashi, Krithi Vaseshwar will be a gigantic ling. Lord Shiva declared that he and his family would always be in Krithi Vaseshwar Ling for the good of humanity.

The ancient temple was originally demolished by Aurangzeb in the 17th century and a mosque was constructed on the site; the Shiva lingam continued to be worshipped by locals in the courtyard beneath it. Today, the lingam is situated under open sky within a mosque complex,
