The Sri Vishwanath Temple of Kashi Hindu University was established on Wednesday, March 11, 1931, on Chaitra Krishna Ashtami in the presence of Pt. Madan Mohan Malviya, the founder of the University, from Kamlo, consecrated by Taponidhi Krishnashram Swami Ji Maharaj.
On February 17, 1958, on Monday, Phalgun Krishna Charudashi, on the solemn occasion of Mahashivaratri, all the Vedic deeds prescribed for dignity under the leadership of Pandit Vishwanath Shastriji were duly kept up all night and Vishwanath Bhagavan became revered in the Vishwanath Temple at the University. The construction of the temple was completed at the end of 1966.
This white Sangamarmar temple is the highest Shiva temple of the year in India, with a height of 76 meters (250 ft). This temple has been constructed with the support of Birla family and other donors. Since the Birla family has the highest economic contribution in the construction of this temple. Therefore, the general public also makes this temple a Birla temple.
